Welcome to the seventh edition of the Magpie Newsletter, covering technology and distribution in the experiences sector of travel.

1. Arival San Diego

Arival 360 is convening approximately 1,000 attendees representing various parts of the experiences industry. Featured sessions include presentations on transforming experiences from transactional to transformational, and exploring the future of immersive entertainment including Netflix House.

2. Airbnb Has a Math Problem

Airbnb plans to relaunch its experiences offering in the spring, but faces the challenge of building a billion-dollar business line while maintaining the unique, long-tail product model that differentiated Airbnb Experiences in the first place. Industry commentary explores this tension.

4. Viator -- The Founding Story

Rod Cuthbert's founding of Viator is a story of accidental discovery that became transformational for the industry. The platform was acquired by TripAdvisor in 2014 for $200 million and now facilitates approximately $4 billion worth of experience bookings annually.

5. OCTO Content Capabilities

OCTO continues to streamline industry connectivity. Bookings and availability standards were completed the previous year, and content specifications -- involving more complex integration work -- are launching for industry feedback, with finalization expected in early 2025.

6. The Latest in AI

Recent AI developments of note for the travel industry:

  • OpenAI Voice Mode (released September 24): Enables conversational interaction beyond basic text queries, particularly useful for complex strategic problem-solving
  • Google NotebookLM: Converts uploaded documents into podcast-format audio while also enabling quizzing, summarization, and FAQ creation
  • OpenAI o1: Represents advanced reasoning capabilities, performing at PhD-level complexity for scientific and analytical subjects

7. Industry Landscape

Magpie is developing version 1 of the Experiences Industry Landscape and seeking community input, particularly regarding non-distribution companies in the sector.

8. Skift Global Forum -- Experiences

A discussion featuring leaders from GetYourGuide, Klook, Viator, and Skift analyzed the current state and future direction of the experiences sector.

9. Arival 360 Speakers

Notable conference speakers include Douglas Quinby with his state-of-industry analysis, Caroline Boone (formerly Airbnb Experiences, now Disney Imagineering) on experience creation, Tao Tao of GetYourGuide on differentiation strategies, and Jason Horkin from Netflix on immersive experience design.
